Our Momostenango wool pieces are from a town in Guatemala called Momostenango, in the region of Totonicapan. There are very few artisans that continue working with this technique due to its complexity and lengthy process.
The wool is first spun into yarn (a process still done by hand) and then threaded onto the pedal loom. Once woven to its design, the blanket needs washing. This process is considered a ritual. It takes at least one hour, as each blanket is washed in thermal waters found a 45 min hike away from where they are woven. The washing process is a choreographed dance, consisting of submerging the blankets in the thermal waters and then kicking them to tighten and squeeze the weave. Once dry, each blanket will be brushed for at least two hours. This is what gives them the their soft, blended finish.
